Developing Emotionally Intelligent Peer Leaders
This workshop offers an introduction to an emotionally intelligent and experientially based youth leadership program. The program offers an overview of an orientation process that is based on the Full Value Commitment. The Peer Leadership program consists of carefully selected students who lead a semester long freshman orientation. The program structure includes a student directed Peer Leadership Advisory Board, approximately forty Peer Leaders and two adult advisors. The Advisory Board directs the selection and training process of the entire program. The remaining Peer Leaders facilitate the freshmen orientation that occurs once a week in physical education classes. The advisors provide overall direction, training and support to the program. The Peer Leaders participate in an extensive training process that prepares them to run small groups of freshmen using experiential learning. This proven, dynamic and effective approach provides a safe environment for the freshmen and offers support for a successful high school career.
